Fatwa: "The wife must obey her husband, and if a Muslim woman married a non-Muslim man, her obedience to him would conflict with her obedience to Allah"

The fatwa below addresses the issue of why a Muslim man may marry a non-Muslim woman (Jew or Christian), but a Muslim woman may not marry a non-Muslim man. The fatwa quotes numerous highly-respected Muslim imams, both classical and modern (including Yusuf al-Qaradawi and al-Azhar University), and really makes it difficult to doubt the fact that Islam, or at least mainstream Islam, does indeed forbid the Muslim woman from marrying a non-Muslim. It also lays out the reasons for why this is so, the most important of which, in my opinion, is Islam's view that the man has wilaya wa-qiwama (guardianship and trusteeship) over his wife, and that the "wife must obey her husband." Since Islam must be always be supreme--or in the words of Shaykh al-Qaradawi below, al-Islam y'alu wala y'ali 'alayhi (Islam is exalted over all, and nothing is exalted above it)--therefore the Muslim woman cannot be in a state of inferiority, i.e. married, to an infidel.

This is also interesting in the context of a fatwa from an officially-sponsored Kuwaiti journal which I translated and posted a couple of days ago, which says that, "Among the clearest evidences of Islam's tolerance and guaranteeing of freedom of conscience, is its permitting marriage to a non-Muslim woman from the People of the Book." If that's so, then this fatwa would seem to contain one of the clearest evidences of Islam's supremacist and intolerant attitudes.

Translated from the Islamic Fatwa Council of Jerusalem, 17 February 2009:
Q: What is the ruling on a Muslim woman marrying a non-Muslim man?
Date: 17 February 2009
A: In the name of Allah the most merciful.
Praise be to the Lord of the worlds, and peace and blessings be upon our lord Muhammad, and upon his family and companions.
Allah Almighty said: "Wed not idolatresses till they believe; for lo! a believing bondwoman is better than an idolatress though she please you; and give not your daughters in marriage to idolaters till they believe, for lo! a believing slave is better than an idolater though he please you. These invite unto the Fire, and Allah inviteth unto the Garden, and unto forgiveness by His grace, and expoundeth His revelations to mankind that haply they may remember" [Qur'an 2:221].
This noble verse indicates that it is forbidden for a Muslim woman to marry a non-Muslim man. There is no disagreement on this from any Qur'anic commentators, and it is agreed to by all scholars. The meaning of non-Muslim here includes any infidel or polytheist, whether he is an idolater, Magi, or one of the People of the Book.
The following are a few statements from scholars (on the topic):
Imam al-Qurtubi said: "The Muslim woman may not be married to a polytheist. The ummah is in agreement that the polytheist may in no way have sexual relations with a Muslim woman, for that would be a shame for Islam.
Imam al-Razi said: "There is no disagreement here that the meaning here is all--or rather, all non-Muslims. (It means) that the believing woman is not permitted to be married to the infidel under any circumstance, and this includes all different types of infidels."
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The verse was revealed which made Muslim women forbidden for polytheists, including the idolaters--as Allah Almighty said: [Qur'an 2:221]. According to the Qur'an, this also includes polytheists from the People of the Book, due to the severing of guardianship between Muslims and polytheists [i.e. polytheists may not have guardianship over Muslims]. The people have not differed on this point, as far as I know."
Imam al-Kasani said: "It is not permissible to marry a Muslim woman to an infidel, due to the saying of the Most High: "...and give not your daughters in marriage to idolaters till they believe..." [Qur'an 2:221]. This is because if a Muslim woman is given in marriage to an infidel, there is fear that the Muslim woman might fall into unbelief, for the husband will invite her to his religion. Women generally follow men; they are influenced by them in their actions, and follow their authority in matters of religion. This is indicated in the end of the verse of the saying of the Most High: "These invite unto the fire." Wherefore they invite the believing women to unbelief, and inviting to unbelief is the same as inviting to the fire, for unbelief requires the fire. Therefore since marrying a Muslim woman to an infidel is a cause which invites to that which is forbidden, it is also forbidden. Although the text stipulates polytheists, since the cause for this is the invitation to the fire, it can be generalized to include infidels. All (scholars) are in agreement in generalizing the ruling, since the cause (for the ruling) is generalized. So it is not permissible for a Muslim woman to marry a man from the People of the Book, just as it is not permissible to marry her to an idolater or a Magi. For the shari'ah prohibits the guardianship of the infidels over the believers, according to the saying of the Most High: "And never will Allah grant to the unbelievers a way (to triumphs) over the believers" [Qur'an 4:141]. For if an infidel were to marry a Muslim woman, he would be granted "a way (to triumph)" over her, and that is not permissible."
Imam Malik said: "Do you not see that it is not permissible under any circumstances for a Muslim woman to be married to a Christian or Jew? For if a Christian woman were married to a Christian man, and she converted to Islam, then she would be under his possession, as if she were in her 'idda. Even if a Christian began a marriage with a Muslim woman, the marriage was void."
Imam Ibn Jizzi said: "All scholars are in agreement that it is absolutely forbidden for an infidel to marry a Muslim woman."
Imam al-Shafi'i said: "It is not permitted for a Muslim woman to marry an infidel under any circumstance unless he converts to Islam, owing to the saying of the Almighty: "...and give not your daughters in marriage to idolaters till they believe..." [Qur'an 2:221], as well as His saying: "if ye ascertain that they are Believers, then send them not back to the Unbelievers. They are not lawful (wives) for the Unbelievers, nor are the (Unbelievers) lawful (husbands) for them" [Qur'an 60:10]." [...]
[Goes on to quote from Ibn Muflih, Ibn Qaddama, Ibn Hazm, Muhammad bin Abu-Bakr, and Dr. 'Abd-al-Karim al-Zaydan, all essentially agreeing with the previous quotes]
Shaykh Dr. Yusuf al-Qaradawi says:
"The Muslim woman is not given in marriage except to a Muslim, according to the saying of the Most High: "Wed not idolatresses till they believe," and then He says "...and give not your daughters in marriage to idolaters till they believe..." [Qur'an 2:221]. Then He made an exception, saying, "The food of the People of the Book is lawful unto you and yours is lawful unto them. (Lawful unto you in marriage) are (not only) chaste women who are believers, but chaste women among the People of the Book" [Qur'an 5:5]. Thus it is permitted to marry chaste women among the People of the Book, but it is not permissible for men (among the People of the Book) to marry Muslim women.
"This wisdom is this: The Muslim believes in all the messengers, including Moses and Jesus (peace be upon them). (He also believes in) all the books, including the Torah and the Gospel. On the other hand, the People of the Book only believe in their messengers and their books. Islam has permitted for the wife from the People of the Book who is married to a Muslim to go to her places of worship, such as the church or temple. On the other hand, the People of the Book do not permit the Muslim wife--if they had married her--to go to the mosque and manifest the rituals of Islam.
"And what's even more important:  Islam is exalted over all, and nothing is exalted above it. Marriage is guardianship and trusteeship. A Muslim man may be a guardian and a trustee over his wife from the People of the Book; however, a non-Muslim may not be a guardian and a trustee over a Muslim woman, for Almighty Allah said: "And never will Allah grant to the unbelievers a way (to triumphs) over the believers" [Qur'an 4:141]. The wife must obey her husband, and if a Muslim woman married a non-Muslim man, her obedience to him would conflict with her obedience to Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him).
"If perchance there is another hidden ruling which prohibits the marriage of a Muslim woman to a non-Muslim, Allah Almighty knows, for He knows everything which is good for His servants: "Does He not know, Who created? And He is the Knower of the subtleties, the Aware" [Qur'an 67:14].
"It is not for the believer to say anything of Allah, or His wisdom and knowledge, except: "We hear, and we obey: (We seek) Thy forgiveness, our Lord, and to Thee is the end of all journeys" [Qur'an 2:285]."
This comes from a fatwa from al-Azhar:
"It is true that Islam permits the Muslim man to marry a non-Muslim woman (Christian or Jewish), and does not permit a Muslim woman to marry a non-Muslim man. At first glance, this might seem like inequality. But if one understands the true reason for this, one ceases to wonder, and ceases to imagine that it is inequality. For Islam has a point of view on this which clarifies the wisdom behind it. All laws in Islam are based on wisdom and true benefit for all parties.
"Marriage in Islam is based on "love and mercy" and cohabitation. Islam seeks to build the family on sure foundations, which are guaranteed to perpetuate the marital relationship. Islam is also a religion which respects all of the previous divine religions, and makes faith in all of the previous prophets part and parcel of the Islamic creed. Therefore if a Muslim man is married to a Christian or Jewish woman, he is commanded to respect her creed. He is not permitted--from the Islamic point of view--to prevent her from practicing the rites of her religion, and going for that reason to her church or temple.
"Therefore Islam desires that the husband gives an element of respect to the creed and worship of his wife. This guarantees and protects the family from collapse... [ellipsis in original]
"However, if a non-Muslim man marries a Muslim woman, this element of respect for the wife's creed is lost. For the Muslim man believes in the previous religions, and believes in and respects the previous prophets of Allah. But the non-Muslim does not believe in the Prophet of Allah, and does not recognize him, but considers him a false prophet. He believes, usually, in all of the fabrications and lies rumored against Islam and its prophet, and other rumors. Even if the non-Muslim husband does not openly state this in front of his wife, she still lives under the stress of feeling the lack of respect from her husband toward her belief. This is an issue which is not helped merely by words of appeasement and courtesy, for it is an issue of principle. Mutual respect between the husband and wife is the foundation for the perpetuation of the marital relationship.
"Islam was being logical when it forbade the marriage of a Muslim man to a non-Muslim woman from a religion other than Christianity or Judaism, and for the same reason it forbade the marriage of a Muslim woman to a non-Muslim man.
"The Muslim does not believe in any religion except for the divine religions, and others are considered religions of men. For in that case reverence and respect toward the religion of the wife--to say nothing of courtesy--would be lost. This would adversely affect the marital relationship, and would not result in the "love and mercy" required in this relationship."

From what has been presented, it has been made clear that marriage of a Muslim woman to a non-Muslim man, without exception, whether he is from the People of the Book or not, is forbidden, and such a marriage is not permitted, based on the words of scholars both ancient and modern. If such a marriage does exist, it must be annulled immediately.
Almighty Allah knows best.

Islamic Fatwa Council of Jerusalem: "The ruling on the apostate is for him to seek forgiveness within three days, and if not he is killed"

Translated from the Islamic Fatwa Council of Jerusalem, 10 February 2009:
Q: What is the expiation for he who insults the religion, and if he has performed the hajj, does he need to perform it (again)?
Date: 10 February 2009
A: In the name of Allah the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah.
Whoever insults Allah, the angels, and the religion, has apostatized from Islam, and become an infidel -- (agreed).
The apostate is the legally competent one who voluntarily withdraws from Islam, whether he openly declares his infidelity, or utters something which makes him an infidel, or does something which makes him an infidel. In this case, this man has uttered something which makes him an infidel! For he insulted the religion, or in other words mocked, ridiculed, and belittled it. We take this from Islam -- (agreed).
The ruling on the apostate is for him to seek forgiveness within three days, and if not he is killed, according to the saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him): "The blood of a Muslim man is not permissible except under one of three conditions:  1) he commits adultery, 2) he takes an innocent life, or 3) he abandons his religion and separates himself from the community" (narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim from Ibn Mas'ud).
Let us beware, servants of Almighty Allah, to not be careless or reckless in our words and deeds, and to fear Almighty Allah in that which we say. For it is a great disaster for insults to the religion and the like to be found on our tongues, rather than remembrance and thanks for Almighty Allah.
He who apostatizes and then repents and returns to Islam, the scholars agree that his act (of performing the hajj) is not futile, for he has repented. (His hajj) remains (in effect) and does not need to be repeated.

Friday Prayers in Saudi: "As much as you are able, you must command the good and forbid the evil"

Translated from the website of Shaykh bin Fawzan bin 'Abdallah al-Fawzan, a member of Saudi Arabia's Senior Scholars Council, 15 April 2011. Here Shaykh al-Fawzan explains one of the fundamental differences between Islam and other religions. While Christianity, for example, teaches man to "work out his own salvation with fear and trembling," and then to preach the word to others, Islam goes further than that and requires the Muslim to command others to follow Allah.
...It is not enough for man to be righteous in himself, and learn for himself. That is not enough. Instead he must call others to Allah. He must command the good and forbid the evil. Beginning with his own house and those around him, he must call others to Allah. He must command the good and forbid the evil, and teach people what is good, teach the ignorant. He must call them to Allah, for he cannot limit this only to himself and say, "I have no people under my responsibility." No, you have a duty to call people to the path of Allah, to obedience to Allah Almighty. As much as you are able, you must command the good and forbid the evil. It is not enough for you to avoid evil and work righteousness for yourself. No, you must spread the good around you. The Almighty said: "Ye are the best of peoples, evolved for mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and believing in Allah" [Qur'an 3:110]. [...]

Kuwaiti Journal: "Killing the Apostate Does Not Conflict With Religious Freedom"

The following is translated from, which reprinted it from the journal published by the Kuwaiti government, 'Alim al-Fikr ("World of Thought"), First Volume, 1971. This essay includes the oft-repeated argument that the apostate from Islam is killed not because of his belief, but because he essentially commits high treason by coming out publicly against Islam, i.e. the state (the Muslim Brotherhood-linked European Council of Fatwa and Research makes the same argument here).

What I found most interesting here was the contention that one of the proofs of Islam's truth is the fact that hardly any Muslim "apostatizes from his religion after tasting its sweetness." Therefore it is the insecurity of Muslims about their religion which forces them to kill apostates, for if anybody did voluntarily attempt to leave Islam, that would show in their minds that there is something wrong with Islam. Thus the apostate must be branded a conniving and dishonest hypocrite, and must be killed in order to dissuade others from trying to leave. This is the attitude seen throughout Islamic history, such as that recorded in Ibn Ishaq's "Life of Muhammad," or that portrayed in the 1970s pro-Islam film "The Message."
Ruling on the Apostate
The traditional opinion in Islamic jurisprudence is to kill the apostate from Islam, whether a man or a woman. This might cause some to say that this is against the principle of freedom of religious belief and of not compelling one to remain in a religion he doesn't believe in.
To this we give the two following responses:
First: It is clear that killing the apostate is not a punishment for mere belief or for abandoning the Islamic religion. The evidence for this is the fact that Islam has guaranteed and defended the religious freedom of non-Muslims such as Jews and Christians, without compelling or persecuting them. Thus it must needs be that this killing be a punishment for high treason and religious intrigue which is committed by the apostate when he falsely claims to enter Islam, then announces his departure therefrom with the intent of causing harm to it and defaming it. Then he joins the ranks of its conspiring enemies, who use all means to make war against it. This includes what has been termed in the present day as psychological or spiritual warfare.
This is what is decreed in the Noble Qur'an. It tells us of the Jews at the inception of the Islamic call, for they declared their entrance into Islam, and their joining--hypocritically--its ranks, then quickly departing therefrom. They did this as a means of plotting against and harming the call to Islam, and in an attempt to dissuade people from believing in it, and to turn Muslims away from it.
Almighty Allah said: "A section of the People of the Book say: "Believe in the morning what is revealed to the believers, but reject it at the end of the day; perchance they may (themselves) Turn back; "And believe no one unless he follows your religion." Say: "True guidance is the Guidance of Allah: (Fear ye) Lest a revelation be sent to someone (else) Like unto that which was sent unto you? or that those (Receiving such revelation) should engage you in argument before your Lord?" Say: "All bounties are in the hand of Allah: He granteth them to whom He pleaseth: And Allah careth for all, and He knoweth all things" [Qur'an 3:72-73].
It has been transmitted from Ibn 'Abbas that 'Abdallah bin al-Sayf, 'Adi bin Zayd, and al-Harith bin 'Awf, that they [the Jews] said to each other: "Come and let us believe in what what was sent down to Muhammad and his companions in the morning, and we will disbelieve in it in the evening, so that we deceive them in their religion, that perchance they will do as we do, and turn away from their religion." Thus Allah Almighty sent down: "Ye People of the Book! Why do ye clothe Truth with falsehood, and conceal the Truth, while ye have knowledge? A section of the People of the Book say..." [Qur'an 3:71-72].
It has also been related that some of the People of the Book said: "Accept their religion at the beginning of the day, and disbelieve in it by the end of the day. For thus it is more likely that they will trust you, and believe that [when you followed Islam] you found in it that which you despise. This is more likely to turn them away from their religion."
It has also been narrated that the religious leaders of certain Muslim villages--there were twelve of them--said to each other: "Enter the religion of Muhammad in the beginning of the day, and say: "We testify that Muhammad is true." Then at the end of the day, disbelieve and say, "We returned to our learned men and leaders, and asked them, and they told us, "Muhammad is a liar, and you have nothing. We returned to our religion, which to us is much better than your religion." Perhaps they will doubt and say, "Weren't these with us at the beginning of the day--what's with them?!" But they did this, and did not stop at words. Ibn Harir narrated that some of the Jews performed the morning prayer with the Prophet, and disbelieved by the end of the day, plotting to make the people think that it had become clear to them after they followed us that we had erred.

Imam Muhammad 'Abduh said: "This type which the verse refers to when it talks about the Jews turning away from Islam is built on a natural principle of mankind. One of the signs of the truth is that he who knows it does not turn away from it. A certain Hercules from Rome reasoned thusly, when he was asking Abu-Sufyan about the Prophet (peace be upon him). When he was called by Abu-Sufyan to Islam, this was one of the things he asked: "Does he who enters his [i.e. Muhammad's] religion then turn away from it?" "No," Abu-Sufyan responded. This party wanted to lead the people away from this path, so that they would say: "If the falsehood of Islam had not become evident to them, they would not have turned away from it after having entered into it, and learned its secrets. For it is not logical for a man to desire to leave the truth for no reason after he has known it and embraced it."

It is said that some have apostatized from Islam after entering into it, not desiring to deceive or plot against it as those did--what do we say about these? The response to this returns to another principle, which is that some people enter into something believing that they will gain some benefit thereby, not because they believe it is the truth. If it appears to such a person that he is not benefiting or is disappointed in what he had supposed, then he will depart from that thing.

Then he said:  "It seems to me that the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not command the apostate to be killed except to scare those who were planning and plotting to turn people away from Islam by causing them to doubt it. For such plots, while perhaps they did not influence the strong ones among the companions (of the Prophet) who knew the truth and were certain of it, they could deceive the weak, for they knew what was in their hearts. Thus the hadith agrees with the verses which reject compulsion in religion...I have ruled according to how it appears to me..." [ellipses in original].

Yea, there hardly exists a real Muslim who apostatizes from his religion after tasting its sweetness and the loftiness of its principles, whether his conversion to Islam were authentic or casual. An examination of ancient and modern events supports this.

The cases of apostasy--in our present time--are not stirred up except due to another of the forms of deception and trickery. For in some Islamic countries, if some people are fortunate enough to declare their conversion to Islam, then they may be able to gain earthly rewards, or marry a woman, or divorce her. For one may declare his conversion to Islam in order to divorce his wife, if his religion will not permit him to divorce her. Or he may desire to marry a woman whose religion will not permit her to marry him if he remains in his religion. Or he may be running after an inheritance, where he may consider the difference of religion to be one of his obstacles with Muslims and others.

Work is underway to eliminate the hostility against this declaration, according to what is outwardly apparent, for Allah alone is the master of secrets. It has been related that Usama bin Zayd killed a man on the battlefield after he said, "There is no god but Allah." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:  "Did you kill a man after he said, "There is no god but Allah?" Usama said, "He said it under the heat of the sword." The Messenger said:  "Are you privy to the thoughts of his heart?"

These take religion as a mockery or a game, for they continue in their allegiance to their original religion, then declare their return to it simply to realize their purposes and desires. Or they despair from realizing them, yet remain safe from the consequences of this nonsense and deception.

Second: Killing the apostate--while he is an enemy to the Islamic state which relies on its citizens' adherence to the Islamic religion, and whose banner protects those adhere to the other original religions--does not conflict with religious freedom, just as punishment for national treason does not conflict with the freedom guaranteed for citizens by their constitutions. For freedom carries with it obligations toward the public order which the state is built upon, including not coming out against it.

Among the clearest evidences of Islam's tolerance and guaranteeing of freedom of conscience, is its permitting marriage to a non-Muslim woman from the People of the Book, according to the saying of the Most High:  "This day are (all) things good and pure made lawful unto you. The food of the People of the Book is lawful unto you and yours is lawful unto them. (Lawful unto you in marriage) are (not only) chaste women who are believers, but chaste women among the People of the Book, revealed before your time..." [Qur'an 5:5].

This is one of the highest forms of tolerance and religious freedom, says Shaykh Muhammad 'Abduh: "Islam has permitted the Muslim man to marry a woman from the People of the Book, whether Christian or Jewish. It has made it one of the rights of the wife from the People of the Book over her Muslim husband that she may continue to enjoy her religious belief, and carry out the obligations of her worship, and frequent her church or pledge her allegiance..." Friday Prayers in Brazil: Islam Will Dominate the World

Translated from the Friday sermon of Shaykh Khalid Rizq Taqi al-Din at the Guarulhos Mosque in Sao Paulo, Brazil, 29 February 2008:
Praise be to Allah. We praise him, and ask for his help and direction. We seek refuge in him from the evil of our souls and the evil of our actions. We testify that there is no god but Allah alone, with no companions. We testify that Muhammad is his servant and messenger. May Allah bless him and give him peace, as well as his family, companions, and those who follow him until the day of judgment.
We have spoken about the obligation to preach Islam, and have divided the topic into four parts:
1 - The universal nature of Islam
2 - The conduct of Islam
3 - Those who are worried about Islam
4 - The future belongs to Islam
Without a doubt, Islam and Muslims are suffering from a campaign which accuses Islam of terrorism. Another accuses Islam of being spread by the sword. A third seeks to mock the Prophet (PBUH). The land of the Muslims is occupied in Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, and other Islamic countries. All of this which is happening should not in any way weaken the enthusiasm of the Muslim, or his hope that victory belongs to Islam. All of this which is happening to the Ummah is a test in order to distinguish the liar from the truthful, the believer from the hypocrite. It is a preamble to salvation; the darkness which precedes the dawn. The great hope resides primarily in Allah, and secondly in the efforts of the believers like yourselves.
What we should understand in the first place is that our religion is grand. If all the countries of the world, with their planes, ships, resources, tanks, and soldiers united to fight against Islam, they would be unable to eliminate it, because Allah has guaranteed its protection. He says:  "They desire to put out the light of Allah with their mouths but Allah will perfect His light, though the unbelievers may be averse. He it is Who sent His Messenger with the guidance and the true religion, that He may make it overcome the religions, all of them, though the polytheists may be averse" [Qur'an 61:8-9]. He also said: "Surely those who disbelieve spend their wealth to hinder (people) from the way of Allah; so they shall spend it, then it shall be to them an intense regret, then they shall be overcome; and those who disbelieve shall be driven together to hell" [Qur'an 8:36]. He even said: "And certainly Our word has already gone forth in respect of Our servants, the messengers: Most surely they shall be the assisted ones, and most surely Our host alone shall be the victorious ones" [Qur'an 37:171-173].
For his part, the Messenger of Allah said, quoted in Sahih Muslim, "The earth was shown to me, and I saw its west and its east. Certainly my ummah will dominate everything which was shown me."
He also said: "Certainly this religion will prevail wherever the night and day prevail. Allah will not leave a single tent or house except Islam penetrates it, strengthening some and humiliating others--strengthening the Muslims and humiliating the unbelievers."
2. The Prophet (PBUH) said: "Constantinople will be conquered by Muslims," and it was conquered by Muhammad al-Fatih. The Prophet indicated that Rome would be conquered by 70,000 descendants of Isaac. Ibn Kathir said, commenting on this hadith, that they would be the sons of Esau, son of Isaac, son of Abraham, and descendants of the Europeans. Ibn Kathir also said that in the last days, before the hour of judgment, many Europeans would become Muslims, and they would conquer Rome.
3. Translations of the Qur'an in English and French are fulfilling their role, causing people to accept them, and the Islamic religion is the fastest-growing religion in the world.
4. The American magazine "Times" published an article, saying:  "The dawn of Islam will rise once more, but this time it will not rise from the east, but from the west, from the heart of Europe. From that old continent where the minarets are beginning to fight for space with the towers of churches in Paris, London, Madrid, and Rome. The sounding of the call to prayer is now heard daily in these locations, five times per day, testifying that Islam is daily gaining a new locality, new supporters who have found the path.
5. The British journal "Sunday Telegraph" said:  "There is no one specific cause for the spread of Islam at the end of the last century and the beginning of this one. But non-Muslims began to have access to information about Islam and began to get to know it. Through these readings they discovered that Islam is the only divine religion that can be followed; it is the only religion that can solve humanity's problems.
6. The French magazine "Le Monde" published:  "Military strategists have declared that the future [wars] of the world will be religious." This is true, for the war in Palestine is religious, as are the wars in Chechnya, Bosnia, and Kosovo. All are religious wars, and all are against Islam.
Muslims, brothers:
It is our duty to preach Islam without fear of the strength of the world, because Almighty Allah is All-Powerful, and can eliminate all the missiles and computers. All strength is in his hands. It suffices us to do good and trust in him.
Islam is growing in Brazil. Ten years ago there were 20 mosques. Now there are more than 100 mosques and prayer centers. It used to be extremely rare to see a woman with a hijab. Today many women wear them. Prayer is on the rise, and the number of attendees at the mosques is growing daily. Onward, Muslims!
Illuminate your homes with remembrance of Allah. Teach your children the way of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH). Introduce the spirit of hope that the future belongs to Islam to your closest family members and the Muslims in Brazil.
May the peace and blessings of Allah be with the Prophet Muhammad. Amen.

Al-Qaradawi: "The Christian Will Reach an Understanding With His Muslim Brother to Choose a Muslim President"

Translated from an excerpt of an interview with Shaykh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, posted on his website 7 April 2011:
Q: Would you accept the next president of Egypt being a Christian or secularist?
A: I think that this question is unrealistic, for we suppose that the era of election fraud has passed, never to return. But if the elections were free and clean, then it would be logical and natural for the president of Egypt to be a practicing Muslim, not a secularist or a Christian. This is because the majority of the people are practicing Muslims, and would not choose secularism, because secularism is, as Dr. Muhammad al-Bahi said: "Belief in part of the Qur'an, and disbelief [kufr] in part of it." In this era of revolution, the Christian will reach an understanding with his Muslim brother to choose a Muslim president. For the president in Islam is the Imam who leads the people in prayer, and is the teacher in the mosque, and guardian of the entire nation--both Muslims and Christians--according to the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger. [The Muslim] is more fit for the presidency than the secularist, and more concerned for the religion and life of the Christians.

Women Learning to Drive--in Saudi?!

Translated from Dar al-Hayat, 8 April 2011:

Women Are Learning to Drive Near the King Fahd Airport in Dammam

Muhammad al-Dawud

Hundreds of cars, the majority of them four-wheel drive, on the weekend head towards the road that leads to the King Fahd International Airport west of the city of Dammam. Most of them do not intend to travel, whether inside the country or outside of it, nor do they intend to meet travelers. Most of their drivers do not go to the reception area, but instead turn off to the right a few kilometers before arriving at the airport, to a sandy area with many dunes. This sandy eastern area outside the airport has been converted into an "open square" for teaching driver's education. Most of the students are Saudi women.

It is noteworthy that some of the girls, who go to the "Airport Dunes" weekly, have surpassed the basic driving stage, and have reached the point where they are learning advanced techniques such as drifting.
The number of those interested in driving at the dunes has greatly increased recently, especially after the return of many female students who had been sent abroad for study. The circumstances of their daily life (outside Saudi) required them to learn to drive, which has led them to want to practice here, "Fearing that we would forget what we had learned, and also in preparation for us making the attempt, in the event that we are officially allowed to drive soon," according to 'Abir Musa, who returned a few months ago from the United States.
'Abir did not hesitate to insist on daily practice, convincing her husband of the need to "Drive the car any way possible." She stressed that she had learned to drive during her academic studies in the United States, with encouragement from her husband. However, he "was reluctant to agree to my driving in the Kingdom. He only agreed on condition that I drive in areas far away from the main roads, fearing that people he knows would see me and he would feel embarrassed, in addition to his fear that I would be stopped by security officials."

Friday Prayers in Saudi: "These Days Islam Is Being Attacked By the Polytheists, Hypocrites, Jews, and Christians"

Translated from the website of Saudi Shaykh Salih bin Fawzan bin 'Abdallah al-Fawzan, a member of the Saudi Council of Senior Scholars, 25 March 2011:
Islam Is and Will Be a Great and Lofty Religion Until the Hour of Judgment
Friday sermon, 25 March 2011
Praise be to Allah, who sent His Messenger with guidance, and the religion of truth, to manifest all of it in the religion, with Allah as its witness. I testify that there is no god but Allah alone. He has no associate. I testify that Muhammad is His slave and messenger; peace be upon him, as well as his family and companions.
O people, fear Almighty Allah, and thank him for the blessing of Islam. Ask him to confirm it upon you, for in these days Islam is being attacked by the polytheists, hypocrites, Jews and Christians. They want to shake it and change it, and divide the Muslims. This is not a strange behavior from the enemies of Allah and His Messenger, for they have behaved this way in every time and place, with all of the messengers, but especially with our prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). You know what happened to the messenger (peace be upon him) when he was in Mecca, for he and those Muslims with him suffered injustice at the hands of the polytheists. They attacked the Messenger (peace be upon him) and spread lies about him. They said that he was a magician, or a poet, or insane. They said that the Qur'an contained only the fables of the ancients, and poetry, and so on. This was their position on the Messenger (peace be upon him) and the Qur'an. Now their position on the Muslims in Mecca is well-known. They persecuted, attacked, beat, and tortured the weak and humble, in order to turn them away from Islam, for Allah had confirmed the truth of it for them. The Prophet (peace be upon him) remained in Mecca for 13 years in this situation with the infidels and polytheists, after which Allah Almighty permitted him to emigrate, at which point he found the Ansar, and a home which sheltered them, which is Medina. They wanted to prevent him and his companions from emigrating, fearing that they would grow strong and establish their state. So the Muslims slipped out and emigrated in secret, while the Messenger (peace be upon him) remained behind in Mecca, until Allah permitted him to emigrate as well. Then the polytheists met together and consulted on what they should do with the Messenger (peace be upon him), to keep him from joining his companions. So they consulted with each other, and considered three ideas: first, they would kill him and be done with him; second, they would throw him in prison for life so that he would die in prison; or third, they would drive him out of the country. They settled on the first option, which was to kill him. ...
When (Muhammad) reached Medina, he found a home, and the Ansar. However, the wickedness of the polytheists, Jews, Christians, and hypocrites did not cease. Three enemies gathered against the Messenger (peace be upon him):  the polytheists disbelieved in his religion because they disbelieved in all religions; the Jews knew that he was the Messenger of Allah and that the Qur'an was true, but their jealousy led them to display unbelief and hostility towards him; and the hypocrites outwardly displayed acceptance of Islam in order to save their lives and property, and live with the Muslims, while inwardly they disbelieved, and were with the infidels. The polytheists launched several raids against the Messenger (peace be upon him) several times to kill him, his religion, and his followers. They achieved what they achieved in the first battle, and in the battle of the trench, in the battle of hunayn, but Islam remained strong, and the Muslims remained. Those who were wounded were wounded in the path of Allah, and those who were martyred were martyred to the Garden. When the polytheists, Jews, and hypocrites saw that they could not destroy Islam, they continued to scheme against it, as is told us in the Qur'an. But the revelation continued to come down to the Prophet (peace be upon him). The Qur'an was sent down, Islam grew, and the Messenger was victorious in his raids, until Allah permitted him to conquer Mecca. For he raided Mecca during Ramadan with the soldiers of Islam, and entered it victoriously. Allah conquered Mecca by his hands, and the people subsequently entered the religion of Allah in droves, and delegations came from everywhere. The delegations came from tribes, declaring Islam and pledging allegiance to the Messenger (peace be upon him). Allah Almighty said, in the name Allah most merciful and gracious:  "When comes the Help of Allah, and Victory, and thou dost see the people enter Allah's Religion in crowds, celebrate the praises of thy Lord, and pray for His Forgiveness: For He is Oft-Returning (in Grace and Mercy)" [Qur'an 110:1-3]. This was sounded nearby on his behalf (peace be upon him), because he fulfilled the mission which was given to him, and Allah had fulfilled this religion, for he sent down to him while he was standing on Arafat, the saying:  "This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion" [Qur'an 5:3].
After that he lived for two months and a few days and then passed away (peace be upon him). When he passed away the polytheists were able to attack Islam, and some apostatized. They said, "If he were a prophet he would not have died." They prevented one of the peoples from paying Zakat, and said, "We owe this to the Messenger (peace be upon him). But since he died, now we don't owe it to anyone." The Muslims pledged allegiance to Abu-Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him). He took a strong position, as firm and immovable as a mountain, and fought against the apostates, until Allah extinguished their wickedness, made his religion victorious, and exalted his word. Islam was strengthened during the reign of Abu-Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him). After him came his brethren the caliphs, and Islam spread to the east and the west during the reign of 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). Islam spread to the east and the west, confirming the word of the Almighty:  "He it is Who sent His Messenger with the guidance and the true religion, that He may make it overcome the religions, all of them, though the polytheists may be averse" [Qur'an 61:9].
Allah made this Islam victorious, and made it overcome all of the other religions, and take power over most of the globe. This is the victory of Almighty Allah. It cannot be harmed by the plots of the plotters, or the hatred of the hypocrites, and the polytheists, Jews, and Christians. That will not harm it. The Jews plotted against Islam. The Shi'a and Kharijite sects also secretly plotted. They achieved what they achieved, but Islam was not affected by it. The Amir al-Mu'mineen 'Ali bin Abu-Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) was killed by those wicked murderers. He was killed by the Kharijites, and the Shiites disgraced Allah. But Islam was victorious, to Allah be the praise. Islam will continue to be victorious until the Hour of Judgment, for Allah has covenanted to preserve it, and make it victorious. No one will be able to behave arrogantly towards it.
Then came the Tatars at the end of the 'Abbasid caliphate, and did what they did with the Muslims, killing thousands upon thousands of them. Nevertheless Islam remained and was not harmed, praise Allah. Then came the wars of the Crusaders, who raided the land of the Muslims. Allah made the Muslims victorious at the end of their reign, by the hand of the righteous caliph Salah al-Din al-Ayubi (may Allah have mercy on him). For he drove them out of Jerusalem and it returned to the hands of the Muslims. Thus Islam continues to achieve victory after victory, no matter what its enemies attempt. Now, as you know, they're trying to shake Islam, divide the Muslims, dissolve their countries, and occupy their lands. They would like to do this, but Allah will only allow his religion to be victorious, and his word to be exalted. They say this is freedom, this is democracy, this is human rights, and so forth. They say this and advocate it, and encourage demonstrations, and vigils. But Allah be praised for the inhabitants of this country, and for its scholars and rulers, for they have stood firm before this fitna, for they did not give their enemies anything that they wanted
We ask Allah Almighty to confirm us in our religion, and to let our enemies fail. We ask Him to make His religion victorious, and exalt His word. I seek refuge from Allah from the accursed Satan:  "Or do ye think that ye shall enter the Garden (of bliss) without such (trials) as came to those who passed away before you? they encountered suffering and adversity, and were so shaken in spirit that even the Messenger and those of faith who were with him cried: "When (will come) the help of Allah?" Ah! Verily, the help of Allah is (always) near!" [Qur'an 2:214].

Fatwa: "Allah Restricts Through the State What He Doesn't Restrict Through the Qur'an"

Translated from a fatwa by the late Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Shaykh 'Abd-al-'Aziz bin Baz, reprinted in, 2 April 2011:
Question: If this is a hadith, explain it to us: "Allah restricts through the State what he doesn't restrict through the Qur'an."
Answer: Praise be to Allah alone, and peace be upon he who has no prophet after him.
This is a well-known saying of 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and confirmed by 'Uthman bin 'Afan, the third rightly-guided caliph (may Allah be pleased with him). It is also narrated from 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): "Allah restricts through the State what he doesn't restrict through the Qur'an." This means that he prohibits the people from committing that which is forbidden, more through the power of the State than through the Qur'an. For some people have weak faith, and are not affected by the restraints of the Qur'an. Instead they deny the Qur'an, and approach that which is forbidden with indifference. But when they know that there is a punishment from the State, they step back, afraid of the State's punishment. For Allah restricts through the State, meaning the punishments of the State--through them he restricts the actions of some criminals more than he does through the Qur'an due to their weak faith, and lack of fear of Almighty Allah. But they fear that the State will persecute them, or strike them, or take their money, or exile them from the country. They fear all of this, so they restrain themselves according to what is prohibited in the Qur'an, due to their weak faith and lack of discernment.
There is no strength except in Allah. May Allah reward you well. By Allah comes success, and may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon our prophet Muhammad, as well as his family and companions.

Fatwa: "Is It Permissible for Women to Ride Bikes?"

Translated from the website of the European Council for Fatwa and Research, a Muslim Brotherhood-linked group which is presided over by Shaykh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, 23 August 2009:
Question: Is it permissible for women to ride bikes? What about for a girl who is a virgin, with the probability that she could lose her hymen?

Answer: Regarding riding bikes or cars or any other vehicles: it is a thing which is permissible in and of itself. In the days of Jahiliyyah [i.e. pre-Islamic period], and even after converting to Islam, Arab women would ride camels. The Messenger (peace be upon him) said: “The best women who ride camels are the women of Quraysh; they treat children with compassion in their youth, and watch over what is in the hands of their husbands,” meaning their money.

This is on the condition that she guards the rules of the shari’ah on propriety while she’s riding, regarding the requirement to wear lawful clothes, and to beware of body to body contact, for that is prohibited by the shari’ah. Regarding the probability that virgin girls could lose their hymens, you should study this issue and find out the level of probability. If it is a rare thing, the legal decision is that there is no ruling against things which are rare, for rulings are adopted (only) for things which are likely or common. On the other hand, if it happens often and cannot be guarded against for one reason or another, then the virgin Muslim girl must be prohibited from doing this, so that ill is not thought of her, and she be accused of something of which she is innocent. The exception to this is if it is ruled to be necessary, such as if it is the only means by which she can arrive at school or work which is obligatory for her, or so forth, for necessity can make that which is (otherwise) prohibited permissible, as the Most High said: “But if one is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits,- then is he guiltless. For Allah is Oft-forgiving Most Merciful” [Qur’an 2:173].

Protests in Afghanistan Against Qur'an Burning Leave 10 Dead, 83 Wounded

Translated from, 2 April 2011:
Security forces in Afghanistan killed 10 people and wounded 83 others during protests in Kandahar against the burning of a copy of the Noble Qur'an by American extremist pastor Terry Jones. An individual also blew himself up in a military base belonging to foreign occupation forces in the capitol city of Kabul which resulted in 3 soldiers wounded.

The killings occurred during the second day of protests against what was done by the extremist pastor in Florida on 20 march. Some of the protesters raised the white banner of the Taliban movement, and chanted "Long live the Taliban" and "Death to America."

An official disclosed that two of the killed were from the Afghan police. The violence connected to these demonstrations is the worst such violence witnessed in Afghanistan in the last several months. This comes at a time when the country is preparing for the first stage of an operation which will last years to turn over authority for security from occupation forces to Afghan forces loyal to the occupation.

These attacks came due to an outburst of rage caused by the extremist pastor Terry Jones burning the Qur'an in front of 50 people from his church in Florida on 20 March, according to his website...

Hamas Glories in 2003 Suicide Bombing in Israeli Restaurant Which Killed 17

From the official website of Hamas' military wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, 31 March 2011:
The Operation that Shook Haifa and Killed 17 Zionists (with Photos)
al-Qassam - exclusive:
Eight years have passed, and yet the memory of the heroism displayed by that man remains vivid in our minds. Eight years ago a member of the al-Qassam Brigades, the hero Shadi Zakaria al-Tubasi, executed his martyrdom operation which shook the heart of the usurped city of Haifa. At that time, the martyr entered a Zioinist restaurant carrying a "meal" made by al-Qassam. Within moments after entering the restaurant, the echo of the explosion shook the ground under the enemies' feet. The al-Qassam hero was able to carry out his operation, causing everyone there to fall wounded or dead; in total he was able to kill at least 17 Zionists, and injure more than 45 others
The Place Is Destroyed, al-Qassam Endorses the Operation
The restaurant Matse next to the Grand Canyon commercial complex in central Haifa was the stage for the operation. Eye witnesses said at the time that the roof of the restaurant was completely destroyed. In the midst of the terror left behind by al-Qassam, a Zionist described the death that he witnessed but did not partake of himself:  "I was sitting on the balcony of my house which is near the restaurant, and suddenly I heard a loud noise like I'd never heard before in my life, and afterwards I saw everything destroyed all at once."
For its part, the al-Qassam Brigades endorsed the operation, and declared the heroism of the commando who had come from the alleys of the Jenin refugee camp to cause the enemies to taste the meal of death which had been prepared by al-Qassam. For the hero was a member of al-Qassam:  Shadi Zakaria al-Tubasi, 23 years old, was the one who aptly delivered the meals of death in that operation.
Haifa and Shadi, and the Art of Choosing the Location
Haifa, o bride of the captive tales, al-Qassam have not forgotten you. Behold they have sent you one of their righteous sons to inform you, o captive bride, that you remain in our memory, lingering painfully in our consciousness. He was desperate for Allah to bring them together, with all the impatience of the lover whose enemy has robbed him of his love. Shadi prepared his plan, initially intending to target the commercial complex named Grand Canyon. However, when he tried to enter the complex, he saw the restaurant teeming with Zionists, and became excited and decided to blow himself up there instead. The restaurant is situated beside the commercial complex which at that time was heavily patrolled by security guards. Therefore the heroic al-Qassam member was able to offer up 17 Zionists in sacrifice as a gift to the usurped Haifa, to allow Haifa to sleep calmly knowing that her captivity will not last much longer.
