New Video from Hezbollah Supporter Blasts Saudi Arabia for Allegedly Supporting Israel Against Hezbollah; Calls Wahhabism "a Knife in Islam's Back"

A new video published on YouTube last week by an apparent Hezbollah supporter blasts Saudi Arabia for allegedly agreeing to finance Israel's war against Hezbollah in the summer of 2006. The video also quotes from Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 to attack Saudi Prince Bandar bin Sultan for attending a private dinner with Pres. Bush within days of the 9/11 attack, and finishes by calling Wahhabism a "knife in Islam's back."  Just more evidence of the violent Sunni-Shi'a divide (see the video here):
In the name of Allah the most merciful,
The Zionist website Filka published the following news on 12 May 2008:
Bandar bin Sultan said to Olmert:  “We will pay all the expenses of war for you to do away with Lebanese Hezbollah.” Bandar bin Sultan, General Secretary of the High Council for Saudi National Security promised to pay all the expenses of the war which the terrorist Zionist entity would launch with the objective of eliminating Lebanese Hezbollah. […]
Quoting from Fahrenheit 9/11:
The director [Michael Moore in Fahrenheit 9/11] says: “Just two days after the events of 9/11, George Bush directed an invitation to Bandar bin Sultan to private dinner in the White House. […]
The video closes with,
Know, Muslim brother, that wherever you see treason, conspiracy, or disaster befalling the Muslims in our present day—know that Wahhabi Saudi Arabia stands behind that disaster by way of petrodollars and weapons, or politics, or royal fatwas.  And let us not forget that the first to sell the Palestinians to the Jews was ‘Abd-al-‘Aziz bin Al Sa’ud, the Wahhabi, in the ‘Aqir conference in 1922.  Wahhabism is a knife in the back of Islam.  With greetings from Basim al-Qurayni, Iraq

Fatwa: "Whoever Insults One of These Four Things, Whether in Jest or Sincerity, Has Become an Infidel and Must Be Killed"

No, the four things are not the four Gospels, and the author of this fatwa is not a right-wing Evangelical minister. The four things, of course, are Allah, Muhammad, the Qur'an, and Islam, and this is yet another offering from the Religion of Peace and Tolerance (shocker!). The author of this fatwa, which comes from the Islamic Fatwa Council of Jerusalem, presided over by Shaykh Khalid Ghanayim, asserts that this is not only his opinion, but also the opinion of the Qur'an, the sunnah, and the consensus of Islamic scholars, and backs all of that up with references from each source. Stay tuned for more from me on this topic in the coming days, as I have quite a bit of material to translate in relation to this. (See the original Arabic here.)
Q: What is the ruling on one who insults the divine, the Prophet (peace be upon him), the Noble Qur'an, and Islam?

Date: 29 Nov 2009
Fatwa No: 349

In the name of Allah the most merciful,

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the two worlds, and peace be upon our lord Muhammad, and on his family and companions.

Whoever insults one of these four things, whether in jest or sincerity, has become an infidel and must be killed. This is what is shown in the text of the book [i.e. the Qur'an], and the sunnah, and all scholars (are in agreement) with it.

1 - The book

The Most High said: "If they violate their oaths after pledging to keep their covenants, and attack your religion, you may fight the leaders of paganism - you are no longer bound by your covenant with them - that they may refrain" (Qur'an 9:12). The spot that witnesses to the infidelity of insulting them, or insulting one of them, is the saying of the Most High, "...and attack your religion..."

2 - The sunnah

Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i, from Ibn-'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), related that a blind man had a slave-mother [a slave who bore children for him] who used to abuse the Prophet (peace be upon him) and disparage him. He [i.e. the blind man] forbade her but she did not stop. He rebuked her but she did not give up her habit. One night she began to slander the Prophet (peace be upon him) and abuse him. So he [the blind man] took a dagger, placed it on her belly, pressed it, and killed her. When the morning came, the Prophet (peace be upon him) was informed about it.

He assembled the people and said: I adjure by Allah the man who has done this action and I adjure him by my right to him that he should stand up. Jumping over the necks of the people and trembling the man stood up.

He sat before the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: Apostle of Allah! I am her master; she used to abuse you and disparage you. I forbade her, but she did not stop, and I rebuked her, but she did not abandon her habit. I have two sons like pearls from her, and she was my companion. Last night she began to abuse and disparage you. So I took a dagger, put it on her belly and pressed it till I killed her.

Thereupon the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Oh be witness, no retaliation is payable for her blood.
(Dagger: thin sword with a nape.)

3 - The consensus [of scholars]

Imam Ishaq ibn Rahuwiya, a prominent imam, said, "Muslims are unanimous (in agreement) that anyone who insults Allah, or insults the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), or attacks anything which Allah Almighty has sent down, or kills a prophet of Almighty Allah; that he is an infidel, and that this is based on everything that Allah has sent down."

Muhammad bin Sahnun said: "Scholars are in unanimous (agreement) that whoever insults and disparages the Prophet (peace be upon him) is an infidel. Continually upon him is the threat of the punishment of Allah. The ruling on him for the Muslim community is execution. Whoever doubts his infidelity and punishment is (himself) an infidel."

Al-Khattabi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "I don't know any Muslim who differs on the duty to kill him," [...]

Al-Mutarjim on The Precarious Position of Jews and Christians in Muslim Countries

In my article on today, I discuss the status of Jewish and Christian minorities under Islamic law, in the context of the recent events in Alexandria and a recent al-Jazeera article targeting Indonesian Jews.

Al-Jazeera’s Arabic-language online newspaper,, recently published what can only be described as a targeted hit piece against Indonesia’s tiny Jewish community. The article (English here) describes them as, “…provid[ing] unlimited support to the Israeli occupation in Palestine,” and also as being “among the Jewish religious extremists who previously went out in marches supporting the Israeli aggression on Gaza.” Then comes the real kicker: “These Jews have constructed a tower for a menorah in Manadu, which is considered the largest in the world.”

Indonesian Jews construct a massive menora -- how will Muhammad's followers respond? What does this al-Jazeera piece mean? To understand, we must first examine how Islamic law treats non-Muslims. Generally-speaking, non-Muslims living under Muslim rule have two options: die, or convert to Islam (see Qur’an 9.5). However, for Jews and Christians, who are given special status in Islam as the 'People of the Book [i.e. the Bible]‘, a third option is available: become a dhimmi, or protected person. The basis for this comes from Qur’an 9.29: “Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued” (emphasis added). CAIR's Nihad 'Awad Refuses to Condemn Hamas

This interview is a little old (2004), but I've never seen it translated anywhere into English for the American public to read, and I think it's important to have out here, especially with Rep. Pete King's upcoming hearings on Islam in America. This is an organization which purports to represent mainstream American Islam, and yet refuses to condemn Hamas, an Islamic terrorist group if there ever was one. (See original Arabic here.)

[...] Talal al-Haj: You worked, Nihad, as Director of Public
Relations in the Islamic Association for Palestine in 1993, and drew the critcism of Palestinian president Yasir Arafat in 1994. There are those who say now that you are a supporter of the Hamas organization in Palestine. What is your position on Hamas?

Nihad 'Awad: First, concerning the issue of Palestine, we have personal
opinions which we stated at the time. But now we work for the CAIR foundation; the CAIR foundation represents the Muslim masses in America
--this is an Islamic endowment. The truth [is that] the rumor which was spread about CAIR is an Israeli viewpoint, which paints the Muslim community with a broad brush. This is the price of not condemning liberation movements, whether in Palestine or Lebanon. I truly do not condemn these organizations. I will condemn them only when I see that media outlets are requiring the heads of Jewish foundations in America to condemn Israel for its treatment of innocent people; for killing people whether in Lebanon, Qana, or Palestine; for bulldozing their homes; and for their flagrant human rights violations. Not one question [like these] has been directed to any leader of a Jewish foundation in America, so why are the questions being directed at Islamic and Arab foundations in America?

We should put pressure on media and political bodies in America to not look at an important segment of American society--the Islamic segment--from the foreign Israeli viewpoint. We are a segment of American society, and we should be looked at from a purely American viewpoint--not a foreign one, which looks at the Muslim community as if it threatens the interests of Israel. Does the Muslim community in America threaten Israel's interests?! I say that the Muslim community attempts to protect its own interests, and build positive relationships. It has become a bridge of cooperation between the Islamic world and the American administration. This annoys some, but we are not responsible for that.

Talal al-Haj: Do you, a segment of American society, accept the laws accepted by the society? American law states that Hamas is a terrorist organization. Is my question clear?

Nihad 'Awad: This is the only Arab and Christian Senator, and his image was placed next to the image of bin Laden--why? Because he took a position which was different than those of the Israeli pressure groups. No Arab or Muslim leader, or Arab or Islamic foundation in the United States have been spared this accusation, and we are no exception. We do not and will not condemn any liberation movement inside Palestine or Lebanon. If they want us to condemn a liberation movement inside Palestine or Lebanon, then they should condemn Israel ten times over on all levels at all times. We will not condemn any foundation. We are not under the hammer of any person, and we are in a free country. Why [should] we give up our principles?

The Islamic community and world hopes for foundations which are committed to their principles. If we are prevented from meeting with any authority because of this, then we will be proud and will continue our work. We will not give up, Allah-willing. [...]

Al-Mutarjim at "Islamists Say Be ‘Cutters of Necks’; Sex With Prepubescent Girls Okay"

In my article at, I discuss a video I translated from Egyptian TV in which Shaykh Safwat Hejazi makes an explicit call for jihad, even calling on Muslims to "strike and split the head, and cut it in half." I also discuss a recent fatwa authorizing marriage and sex with prepubescent girls, and use both of these incidents to illustrate the difference between how Muslims talk about Islam to each other in Arabic and how Muslim spokesman and apologists in the West talk about Islam.
“You must strike the crowns of the heads,” explains Egyptian Shaykh Safwat Hejazi on his Arabic-language program “Age of Glory,” which airs on the Egyptian al-Nas satellite television network. “Strike and split the head, and cut it in half.” Hejazi further quotes a hadith from ‘Ali, the son-in-law of Muhammad and the fourth caliph of Islam, in which he tells his sons: “Go, fight, and please your grandfather [i.e. Muhammad]. Let him be pleased with you. Fighting is what pleases the prophet (peace be upon him).” Also featured in this video are candid comments from Shaykh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the highly-popular Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated shaykh who hosts “Shari’a and Life” on al-Jazeera, lamenting the fact that Muslims are more eager to fight and die for Allah than they are to live and serve others.

It is shocking to see these brazen calls for violent jihad in English. Yet those few of us here in the West who understand Arabic are sadly not surprised at this–it is actually quite common to hear this type of language coming out of the Middle East. The reason it is so shocking to hear these things in English is because Muslim spokesmen in the West are very adept at smoothing over the violent, intolerant, and otherwise shocking aspects of Islam in order to dupe their Western audience into believing that they have nothing to fear from Islam.
I recently found a perfect example of this in an Arabic-language fatwa from the website, which was founded by Yusuf al-Qaradawi and is currently listed as the sixth-most popular Islam-related website. The fatwa frankly admits that Islam makes it “permissible to have sexual intercourse with a prepubescent girl”; because, the fatwa continues, “It is true that the prophet (peace be upon him) entered into a marriage contract with A’isha when she was six years old, however he did not have sex with her until she was nine years old” (emphasis in original).

Fatwa: "It Is Not Permissible ... to Drive Christians to Their Churches"

Lest all the calls of Muslim-Christian solidarity from smooth-speaking Muslim spokesman in the wake of the Alexandria bombing fool you, here comes this fatwa from the highly-popular Islamic website ruling that Muslims are not allowed to drive Christians to church, as that is tantamount to "support[ing] them in their vain and perverted rites and religion." Apparently Muslim-Christian outreach and understanding is only one-sided. (See original Arabic here.)
Fatwa No.: 147,523
Title: Ruling on transporting Christians to their churches
Date: 19-1-2011

Question: A bus driver occasionally drives Christians to their churches to perform religious rites. He then goes to the mosque and performs his prayers. When they finish their rites, he drives them back home. Of course he doesn't always do this, but he does do it sometimes. At times he also drives Christian dance teams, who are performing some rites associated with Christian holidays. What is the ruling on all of this?

Fatwa: Praise be to Allah, and prayers and peace be upon the prophet of Allah, and on his family and companions, etc.

It is not permissible for this man to drive Christians to their churches, nor to drive those who dance on their holidays. For if the Christians are confessing their religion, it is not permissible to support them in their vain and perverted rites and religion. This is according to the saying of the Most High: "Help ye one another in righteousness and piety, but help ye not one another in sin and rancour" [Qur'an 5:2]. This is the general view, which is contrary to the view of the Hanafis, who hold that it is permissible to do such things for employment. [...]

Al-Jazeera Accuses Indonesian Jews of "Supporting the Israeli Aggression on Gaza"

Accusations like these are sometimes all it takes for non-Muslim minorities living under dhimmi status in Muslim countries to become the target of harassment and violent attacks. (See the original Arabic here.)
Indonesian Jews Support Israel
Mahmoud al-'Adam, Jakarta, 17 Jan 2011
The Jewish community in Indonesia, despite being few in number and possessions, and being relatively new, provides unlimited support to the Israeli occupation in Palestine.
About 200 Jewish families have spread to the areas of Manadu and Manhasa in the Sulawesi Peninsula in the middle of the Indonesian archipelago, and have named themselves "the Congregation of Indonesian Jews." "They are among the Jewish religious extremists who previously went out in marches supporting the Israeli aggression on Gaza two years ago," according to Arta Wijaya, researcher of Zionist affairs in Indonesia.
He added in recent comments to that, "These Jews have constructed a tower for a menorah in Manadu, which is considered the largest in the world. They chose this region because the majority of its residents are Christians who support Israel."
Regarding their actions rendered in service to Israel, Wijaya says, "They are trying to open up diplomatic relations with the Indonesian authorities, on the basis of spurring investment for the Jews in the country, and to build networks of workers to support Israel. They are also winning over some of the authorities, who are calling for Israelis to come [to Indonesia] for tourism, to teach Judaism, and for trade, even though Indonesia does not have diplomatic relations with Israel, and does not permit Israeli passport holders to enter their land." Fatwa: "It Is Permissible to Have Sexual Intercourse with a Prepubescent Girl"

[Update, 7 Mar 2011:  see full translation of this fatwa here]

This is another fatwa from, which again is the sixth most popular Islamic website on the internet, according to Wikipedia. As the author of this fatwa points out, this ruling is entirely based on the Qur'an and the example of the prophet, who is considered the perfect example for Muslims in all ages. How many young girls have been and continue to be abused due to Muhammad's perverse actions in having sex with a nine-year-old, which now must be made permissible for all Muslims? (See the original Arabic here.)
Title: Is it permissible to restrict the age at which girls can marry?
Submitted by: Ahmad
Date: 24 Dec 2010
Question: What is your opinion of the calls from more than one Islamic country to prohibit girls from marrying before the age of eighteen? Which is nearest to Islam--these calls or not specifying a certain age for marriage the nearest to Islam? Is it correct that Islamic scholars permit the father to marry off his young daughter (I mean, a child)?
Answer: In the name of God, praise to God, and prayers and peace be upon the prophet of God, etc.
Scholars very nearly agree that it is the right of the father to marry off his young, immature daughter. This is owing to his authority over her, for as he is responsible for directing her and providing for her, he is also responsible for doing what he believes is in her interest on the issue of marriage.
Ibn Qudama in al-Mughni said:  "No one but the father can compel a woman, or marry off a young girl, whether a grandfather or otherwise." This was spoken of by Malik, Abu-'Ubayd al-Thawri, and Ibn Abu-Layli. This was also spoken of by al-Shafi'i, except he said it of the grandfather, making him like the father, because he has the authority of a parent, including to compel her like the father.
Al-Hasan, 'Umar Ibn-'Abd-al-'Aziz, Tawus, Qatada, Ibn-Shirama, al-Awza'i, and Abu-Hanifa said: "No one but the father can marry off a young girl; but she has the choice if she has matured." All of them but Abu-Hanifa said: "None but the father can marry two children, for they have the choice if they have matured."
It is important for us to understand that it is not a duty for a father to give his young girl in marriage, but it is restricted to her best-interest. For it is not permissible unless he believes that her best-interest requires it, and God is his judge on that.
The Noble Qur'an has also mentioned the waiting period [i.e. for a divorced wife to remarry] for the wife who has not yet menstruated, saying: "And those who no longer expect menstruation among your women - if you doubt, then their period is three months, and [also for] those who have not menstruated" [Qur'an 65:4]. Since this is not negated later, we can take from this verse that it is permissible to have sexual intercourse with a prepubescent girl. The Qur'an is not like the books of jurisprudence which mention what the implications of things are, even if they are prohibited. It is true that the prophet (PBUH) entered into a marriage contract with A'isha when she was six years old, however he did not have sex with her until she was nine years old, according to al-Bukhari. Dubai Fatwa Authorizing Make-Up for Men Sparks Controversy

This one made me laugh... (See original Arabic here.)
Fatwa from Dubai Authorizing Make-Up for Men Sparks Controversy at al-Azhar

Sabhi Mujahid, Islam Online, Cairo, 14 Dec 2010

The fatwa which was recently released by Doctor Ahmad 'Abd-al-'Aziz al-Haddad, the Grand Mufti on the Board of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Work in Dubai, UAE, concerning "The permissibility of men using make-up under the condition that they don't look like women," has sparked a bit of a controversy within al-Azhar regarding the importance of the fatwa and related regulations.

At the time some rejected the fatwa, considering it unnecessary and opening the door for various types of corruption; however, others supported the issuance of the fatwa, while still expressing various regulations and conditions on how men should use make-up.

Dr. al-Haddad issued his fatwa after receiving various complaints and questions about allowing young men to use make-up, especially the make-up for men which has been released in Gulf markets.

The fatwa said: "The use of make-up by men is generally permissible, whether it is required for their job, or to hide pimples on their face, or even for beautification, for God is beautiful and loves beauty, and has permitted the soldier to apply black dye, with no dispute."

Dr. Muhammad al-Shahat al-Jundi, member of the Islamic Research Academy and the Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, said to Islam Online: "Men have their speciality, and women have their speciality. It is true that God commanded adornment when he said: 'O sons of Adam, take your adornment at every mosque.' However, this does not mean to adorn with make-up."

He continued: "Islam requires every Muslim to be comely, but at the same time does not require him to use make-up, or to confuse the roles of men and women, especially since the use of make-up could in some cases lead to changing God's creation. This is even (true) for women, except that He does allow women to use make-up without excess to beautify themselves for their husbands." [...]
Lights Out: Islam, Free Speech And The Twilight Of The West

UAE Paper Describes Israel as a Western "Project for Dominance of the Islamic Nation"

Sure, don't worry about the Arabs in the Gulf who have all our money, they're moderate! Look, they drive our cars and eat at our restaurants, that means they like us, right? If only it were that simple. But reading this, is it any wonder that the Csarist forgery "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" continues to be a best-seller throughout the Middle East?  This article also supports the idea that the West is not hated because of its association with Israel, but rather the opposite appears to be true:  Israel is hated because it is seen as an outpost of the West. (See the original Arabic here.)
Facing Mossad Is an Active Struggle
al-Khalij (UAE), 13 Jan 2011, Yusuf Makki
The goals of the implanted usurper Zionist entity in Palestine, the link between the eastern and western sections of the Arab world, have been said and revealed by many. Its intentions and expressions have begun to reveal themselves little by little, since Napoleon's occupations of Egypt and his panoramic view of the Sunni Peninsula, and his pointing out that whoever controls the region historically constituted Palestine, would control the path to the east. Some orientalists have cited this, and the British wanted to take over the region which divided between Asia and Africa in order to secure a route to the pearl of British destiny. In Herzl's letters to the Europeans, he pointed out that the establishment of a Jewish entity on the land of Palestine would constitute a powerful embankment between the civilized and the barbarian, and would protect European interests.
All of this should remain vivid in our memories, but for many it has become simply something in history, which is no longer important. During the course of nearly a century now, since the Balfour Declaration which promised the Zionists the establishment of a national home for the Jews in Palestine, the Zionist project, in concept, preparation, and origin, is a Western project par excellence. It was and continues to be at heart one of many projects for dominance of the Islamic nation, with all its ramifications and manifestations.
Therefore the project targets not only Palestine, but the entire Arab nation. Palestine has become a launching point for the Zionist aggression against Arabs. During several long decades, the usurper entity has proved the truth of this through its conduct, with repeated attacks on Arab lands from Baghdad to Tunis. In the last five decades, the arm of Mossad and networks of "Israeli" spies have reached the majority of Arab countries, confirming by their activities the continual danger this entity poses to Arab national security and to the stability of the entire region, without exception, including those countries who have signed bilateral treaties with "Israel." Saudi Sheikh Rejects Equality Between Muslims and Infidels, Men and Women

Saudi Sheikh, 'Abd-al-Rahman bin Nasir al-Barrak explains that there is no equality in Islam, or at least not in the way the West and the Human Rights Charter defines it. (See original Arabic here.)
Fatwa title: What is the ruling on the saying uttered by some people: "Islam is a religion of equality"?
Fatwa no. 38610, 7 Oct 2010
Answer: Praise be to God. Many people have spoken the phrase, "Islam is a religion of equality." They should know that this statement is heinous and false. Some Muslims may say it out of good intentions, seeking to praise and glorify Islam. Perhaps they don't know the real truth behind this phrase. This phrase is spoken by some whimsical people, who thereby reach out for purposes that are contrary to the law of Islam, such as the equality of rights between Muslims and infidels, and between men and women. They do this for the infidels, running behind their ways and their calls. But God hath differentiated between men and women in terms of rights, duties, and judgments. He hath also differentiated between Muslims and infidels in terms of judgments and penalties. The universal, legitimate, and penal Sunnah of God recognizes the differences--this is common sense. The Qur'an is frank in rejecting equality among things that are different. The Most High said: "Not equal are the blind and the seeing, nor the darknesses and the light, nor the shade and the heat, and not equal are the living and the dead..." [Qur'an 35:19-22]. He also said, "Are those who know equal to those who do not know? Only they will remember who are people of understanding" [Qur'an 39:9]. [...] The Almighty also said, "The woman is not like the man." He also said regarding the inheritance of sons and brothers, "The man receives the fortune of two women."
Therefore there should only be equality among things which are identical. The ruling of one thing is also the ruling of its counterpart, logically and legally. Therefore we believe in all of the messengers of God: "We do not differentiate between one of his messengers."  We also disbelieve in everything which worships something other than God: "Say, 'O infidels, we do not worship what you worship'." It is correct to say, "Islam is a religion of justice." Justice means placing things in their proper places, by giving everyone his proper right. This includes some things which are known logically, and others which are known only by the law, and others which fit in both categories.
There are two issues here which are defined and called for by the UN, and which it requires every member nation to apply, specifically targeting Muslims. The first issue is regarding the difference between Muslims and infidels. It is known that this contradicts the shari'a of Islam, in terms of retribution, inheritance, marriage, brotherhood, and loyalty. [...] The call for equality between Muslims and infidels has been made in conferences and seminars under the banner of humanitarianism and the like. Branching out from this is the call for coexistence, religious dialogue, and world peace, by which they deceive the Muslims into giving up the law of jihad in the path of God, and God's requirement of disloyalty to the unbelievers.
The second issue: the call for equality between men and women. The UN issued this in a document entitled, "Preventing Discrimination Against Women," [...]
God hath differentiated between men and women in the shari'a of Islam, required by their natures and legacy. [He hath differentiated] among them in inheritance and testimony, in the cordiality of a man toward a woman, in rights in marriage, in clothing, in comings and goings, in travel, in mandate, and in responsibilities. [...]
The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades)

Tuesday, January 11, 2011 "Offensive Jihad Is Permissible to Secure Islam's Borders, to Extend God's Religion, Remove Every Religion but Islam from the Arabian Peninsula" is listed as the 6th most popular Islamic website in the world. And yet, Western apologists of Islam assure us that the overwhelming majority of Muslims are peaceful, and that Islam rejects offensive jihad. (See Original Arabic here.)
Fighting Against Non-Muslims -- Legitimacy and Rulings, 8 Jan 2011

Q: When is it permissible to fight against non-Muslims, and when is it not permissible? Please elaborate.

Mufti: Dr. 'Imad Mustafa, Professor of Fiqh and Its Origins, at the Universities of al-Azhar and Umm al-Qary

In the name of God, praise be to God, and prayers and peace be upon the prophet of God, etc.:

Fighting against non-Muslims is what is known in Islamic jurisprudence as Jihad in the path of God. Jihad is a prescribed duty in cases of aggression from the infidels against Muslims, for we must resist them, make jihad against them, and defend against them. This is according to the text of the Qur'an, for Almighty God has said: "Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you but do not transgress. Indeed. Allah does not like transgressors" (Qur'an 2:190). This type of jihad is known as defensive jihad, and it is a duty agreed to by all Islamic scholars and all who are wise, and is endorsed in our day by recognized international charters. However, the occupier and his associates have come to label this "terrorism."

Then there is another type of fighting against the non-Muslims known as offensive jihad. Islamic scholars have differed on the issue of offensive jihad, which is to pursue the infidels into their own land without any aggression or assistance to him. Some scholars have gone as far to say that this jihad is illegitimate, while others have gone as far as to say that it is legitimate and even required.

However there can be no disagreement that offensive jihad is not totally prohibited, for two schools [of Islamic jurisprudence] have ruled that offensive jihad is permissible in order to secure Islam's border, to extend God's religion to people in cases where the governments do not allow it, such as the Pharaoh did with the children of Israel, and to remove every religion but Islam from the Arabian peninsula, and to save the captive and weak. "Removing the Christians from the East Is a Zionist Project"

Naturally this columnist does not offer any plausible explanations for how the all-powerful Zionists are coercing innocent Muslims into bombing churches in Iraq and now Egypt. Unfortunately, given that his target audience is Arab Muslims, he really doesn't have to. Their society is so consumed with hatred of Israel that they seem to believe almost any evil spoken of them. (See the original Arabic here.)
That There Be No Second Israel or More!, 11 Jan 2011
What happened in Egypt, specifically in Alexandria, was not a passing attack on Christian regions and churches in order to displace them. Rather it was to ignite fitna between Christians and Muslims, seeing as it was impossible to create this kind of fitna between Sunni and Shi'a, with the existence of a Sunni despotism which left no room for confrontation. This despite the fact that the Christian Copts are the original inhabitants of Egypt since before Islam, although today they constitute only 10 percent of the Egyptian population.
If the initial outlook of Egyptian investigations are correct, which is expected to be the case, regarding the role of the Israeli Mossad in the bombing of the Church of the Saints in Alexandria, then it means that the Zionist plans for division have run their course in Sudan, Egypt, and Lebanon. Since the plot to ignite conflict between Sunni and Shi'a failed, they replaced it with a plot to create fitna between Christians themselves, with the Sunnis and Shi'a standing behind every side. May God forbid!
Removing the Christians from the East is a Zionist project, for the true enemy of Israel is the Christian, who embodies the phenomenon of a natural coalition surrounding him, and interacting with him, and giving him a pattern for living and for coexistence between the religions, cultures, and civilizations. Arab Columnist: "The Greatest Danger Facing the Arab Christian Existence Today Is the Zionist Threat"

More attacks on the Jews, and covering up of the Muslim persecution of Christians. Never mind all the churches being bombed and crowds of Christians being targeted in drive-by shootings in Iraq and Egypt--it's the Jews that are their biggest threat! (See original Arabic here.)
An Unjustified Defense of the Christian Arabs
Nicola Nasir,, 10 Jan 2011
[...] The second truth, shining as brightly as the sun, is that Christianity was born in Palestine, and was launched from Jerusalem specifically, before being cared for by its Arab incubator. Afterwards it broke from its collar to launch toward the West. The greatest danger facing the Arab Christian existence today is the Zionist threat, which threatens Christianity in its Palestinian birthplace--it is certainly not Arabism or Islam or the Arabs or the Muslims, but the Zionist project which vigorously seeks to completely Judaize the birthplace of Christianity, and also ethnically and religiously cleanse the Arabs living there, among them Christians and Muslims, who gave them their dhimmi [i.e. protected] status, and preserved their existence since the seventh century until today. Saudi Sheikh: Those Who Associate Islam with Terrorism Do So to "Deceive, or Out of Ignorance"

"War is deceit," said Muhammad, and nowhere is that more evident than in the words that come out of Saudi Sheikhs. Sheikh Salih al-Fawzan here condemns suicide bombings as being "in the path of Satan," and condemns terrorist groups, but then still says that those in the West who associate Islam with terrorism do so "to deceive, or out of ignorance." Also if you read his statements carefully you see his real motive for condemning terrorism: "Jihad comes by authoritative decree, which cannot be given except by the responsible authority." In other words, there's nothing wrong with jihad terrorism per se, but the Saudis should be the ones declaring it, not al-Qa'ida or other terrorist groups. (Link to original Arabic here.)
A Member of the Saudi Senior Ulema Council: Those Who Carry Out Suicide Operations Are Mujahideen in the Path of Satan

al-Sharq al-Awsat, 7 Jan 2011
Riyadh - Turki al-Sahil

A member of the Senior Ulema Council in Saudi Arabia directed an unprecedented attack on suicide operations, considering their perpetrators as mujahideen in the path of Satan.

Sheikh Salih al-Fawzan, one of the most important members of the Saudi Senior Ulema Council, ruled that killing oneself through suicide operations is not permissible...

In his comments regarding the Alexandria church bombing, he said: "This is treachery. If it was done by Egyptian Muslims, then it was treachery, for these Christians have a dhimma pact with the Egyptians, for they are their neighbors and reside with them. Therefore treachery is not permissible with them. If (the perpetrators) were from outside of Egypt, then this would not be counted against Egypt."

Sheikh Salih al-Fawzan expressed his dismay over the connection of terrorism with Islam, saying: "As you know, the word 'terrorist' and the word 'Islam' have now become connected. If you say 'Muslim,' they say, "This is a terrorist, for their Islam is terrorist," whether intending to deceive, or out of ignorance of Islam."

The member of the Senior Ulema Council stressed that, "Jihad comes by authoritative decree, which cannot be given except by the responsible authority. The terrorist acts carried out now are not jihad but sabotage." [...]

Iraqi Columnist Blames Alexandria Bombing on Fatwa Issued by Saudi Sheikh

This Iraqi columnist finds a link between the bombing in Alexandria and the fatwa (link-Arabic) issued by Saudi Sheikh al-Barrak in March of 2009, which termed the Coptic Church in Egypt "kufar," or infidels, for allegedly keeping captive a Coptic girl who had converted to Islam. And of course, once the Christians, normally considered People of the Book with special privileges, are termed infidels, they lose those privileges and along with it any rights to property or life.
To the Egyptian President: This is the Document and Fatwa Which Was Issued in Saudi Arabia and...

Sheikh al-Barrak
Sawt al-Iraq, 5 Jan 2011, Ahmad Mahdi al-Yasiri (link to Arabic)

To the Egyptian President: this is the document and fatwa which was issued in Saudi Arabia, and which authorized the recent bombing at the church in Alexandria in Egypt. ...

I was by chance searching on the Web on the developments of [Sheikh 'Abd-al-Rahman bin Nasir] al-Barrak's fatwas...during my research I noticed the existence of another dangerous and important fatwa concerning the terrorist action in Egypt, which was sealed and signed by ... Sheikh 'Abd-al-Rahman bin Nasir al-Barrak. This fatwa was connected to the issue of the female Egyptian Coptic Christian Camilia, who had converted to Islam. It was said, or rumored, among extremist Salafi Wahhabi circles in Egypt that the church in Egypt was holding her, and not permitting her to leave. He was the one who pushed the Salafi Wahhabis in Egypt to erupt and threaten to strike the Christians. Thus I found a link and a close relationship between the fatwa and the terrorist operation in Egypt. Then I found the text of the fatwa in which al-Barrak made it permissible to rescue her from what he called the "infidel Coptic Church in Egypt." As this was considered by any interpretation to be an "Islamic" duty, the picture before us became clear, that the cause of this bombing was the deviant Wahhabi ideology, ... the same which permitted the bombing of churches and the killing of our Christian brothers and friends in Iraq.

Son of Imam Blames Islam for Backwardness of Muslim World; Receives Death Threats

A Muslim author living in Germany, the son of an Egyptian Imam, dares to criticize Islam, and other Muslims issue death threats. This on the heels of the governor of Punjab being killed for denouncing Pakistan's blasphemy law, the same law that would probably be used against this author if he were unfortunate enough to live in Pakistan. It's a wonder we don't hear more people in the Islamic world speak critically of Islam...

Hamad 'Abd-al-Samad: I Consider Islam Part of the Problem in the Islamic World, 6 Jan 2011, (link to Arabic)

What would the world lose if the Islamic nations disappeared from the map? Almost nothing, says Hamad 'Abd-al-Samad, and he adds that the Islamic world has stopped innovating, and become a burden on the civilized nations. Indeed it has become a breeding ground for intolerance and violence. The researcher at the University of Munich says in his book, which was published in German and Arabic under the title "The Fall of the Islamic World," that the Muslims are fixed on the past, and are unable to answer the difficult questions of the future. Therefore they flee to the successes of a glorious past."

The book has caused serious controversy since its release in Germany, between those who accuse 'Abd-al-Samad of disseminating and establishing stereotypes, and those who consider him a "brave writer" who has placed his finger on the problem for many people, calling on Muslims to take charge of the reform of their own societies. In this book, 'Abd-al-Samad considers Islam a part of the problem in the Islamic world, and he looks at the Qur'an as a stumbling block in the way of Muslim development, due to the enormous influence the text of the Qur'an has over Muslims. The author has received a number of death threats, and also received accusations that he--the son of an imam of a mosque in the Egyptian countryside--is swimming in the current of hostility to Islam and Muslims. Al-Aqsa Foundation Accuses Israel of Attempting to Judaize Mosques

More anti-semitic fearmongering in Palestine, this time from the al-Aqsa Foundation, which was named a specially-designated global terrorist by the Treasury Department for its ties to Hamas. (See original Arabic here.)

Zionist Plans Accelerated for Judaizing Jerusalem Mosques and the Wailing Wall, 4 Jan 2010
The Zionist occupation recently took a number of accelerated actions to Judaize mosques in occupied Jerusalem as well as the Wailing Wall, which is located west of the blessed al-Aqsa Mosque.

The Zionist occupation has designated millions of dollars to Judaize occupied Jerusalem, such as for example the 'Ayn Salwan Mosque and the Mosque of Qariat Burj al-Nawatir, according to the al-Aqsa Foundation for Waqf [Islamic endowment] and Heritage.

The foundation requested that inhabitants of the occupied lands under the 1948 boundaries, as well as inhabitants of occupied Jerusalem, intensify their visits to the mosques. [...]

Dr. Salim al-'Awa: Zionism Is Behind the Alexandria Church Bombing

One more voice to join the chorus of Muslim commentators blaming the Jews for the attack on Coptic worshipers in Alexandria (original Arabic here):
Dr. Salim al-'Awa: Zionism Is Behind the Alexandria Church Bombing, 4 Jan 2010

Islamic thinker Dr. Muhammad Salim al-'Awa accused Zionist intelligence of involvement in the bombing that targeted Saints' Church in Alexandria.

He said: "There is an agreement between the national community, intellectual Muslims and Christians, and security officials to point the blame at foreign powers." ...

He stressed that the prohibition against killing in places of worship is unequivocal, and added that "I believe very strongly that the ones behind this criminal act are Zionist intelligence agents, whether deceived or deceiving Egyptians, or non-Egyptians. This is what we hope will be discovered by Egyptian security authorities."

"Qa'ida al-Jihad" Attacks Hamas for Sentencing to Death a Muslim Who Killed a Christian

These are the kinds of statements that would get you labeled as an "Islamic extremist" or maybe even just a "violent extremist" in Western press. But let's look at the argument here. This group Qa'ida al-Jihad is taking issue with Hamas ordering the execution of a Muslim in retribution for killing a Christian, because this is against the saying of Muhammad that "A Muslim will not be killed by an infidel." They further point out the status of Christians in a Muslim country as the People of the Book, with three choices: death, conversion to Islam, or living as second-class citizens under the 'dhimmi,' or protected, covenant, which is based on Qur'an 9:29, as well as a couple of sayings of Muhammad recorded in al-Bukhari and Muslim. If the Christian has indeed broken his dhimmi covenant by leaving the Muslim country, or by supporting a nation at war with Islam, as they're alleging Christians in Gaza have done, then by Islamic law the man becomes far game. So is this just a bunch of extremists twisting Islam, or is Islam itself fundamentally 'extreme'? It would be nice if the former were true, but all the evidence points to the latter. Just read the Qur'an, and it all makes sense. (See original Arabic here.)

"Qa'ida al-Jihad" Attacks Hamas for Sentencing to Death a Muslim Who Killed a Christian in Gaza

Yusuf Ayyub,, 3 Jan 2011

The so-called "Qa'ida al-Jihad in the Land of Rabat" launched an attack against the Hamas government in the Gaza Strip, after a civil court belonging to the latter sentenced a Muslim to death by hanging for killing a Christian gold trader.

In a statement published on the "Palestine Press" site, the group alleged that this ruling is contrary to the Shari'a, as the prophet of God said, "A Muslim will not be killed by an infidel." The statement added that "The current ruling for the People of the Book [i.e. Jews and Christians] is death, or enter into Islam, or to remain in the dhimmi [or protected] covenenant, which allows them to reside in the house of Islam indefinitely, provided they keep and fulfill the covenant. If the dhimmi people break their covenant and leave the Islamic nation, whether alone or with the house of war to join themselves to a nation which makes war upon the Muslims, then they have broken the covenant, and the ruling upon them is the ruling of the people of treachery and discord--their blood and money become lawful [i.e. fair game for Muslims]."

The statement described Christians currently in Gaza as having left the dhimmi covenant with the Muslims, and also stressed that, "Any ruling to kill, whether issued in Gaza or in the [West] Bank, any Muslim brother as retribution for any infidel is legally invalid." [...]

Lebanese Political Party: "The Alexandria Bombing Was an American-Zionist Production"

More finger-pointing at the West and Israel from Arab leaders in the Middle East. All of this finger-pointing outward ensures that no fingers are pointed at the underlying fundamental problem, which is Islam and its negative attitudes toward religious minorities. As long as non-Muslims are viewed as second-class citizens, their situation in a Muslim country will always be tenuous at best. (Link to original Arabic.)

Lebanese Popular Congress: The Alexandria Bombing Was an American-Zionist Production, 3 Jan 2011

The Lebanese Popular Congress opined that "the wicked terrorist bombing which targeted Christian worshipers in the Churches of Saints George and Peter in Alexandria coincides with the suffering of Christians in Iraq and Palestine from crimes and displacement under the American and Zionist occupations, which share the same goal: to bring about Islamic-Christian and Islamic-Islamic sectarian fighting. This furthers a plot to divide the Arab world into rival sectarian and ethnic countries, to strike at Pan-Arab unity on one hand, and also to justify the Jewishness of the Zionist entity, and make it the only power in all the region."

According to a report issued by the Congress, it stated that "What happened in Egypt, and what is happening in Iraq, Yemen, Sudan, and Lebanon, and what will happen in other Arab-Islamic countries, is all occurring within the framework of this hellish plot, whose components were carefully crafted in the Zionist-American Greater Middle East project. No one imagines that the success of the colonialists in stripping southern Sudan from the north, or in sowing Sunni-Shi'a fitna in Lebanon, or in dividing Iraq and Yemen, will result in (anything) good for the Arab inhabitants of the region, whether Muslim or Christian. Rather it will be a disaster for everyone without exception. Even the Western world itself will not survive the disastrous consequences." (The report further) stressed that "There is no way to escape from this heinous plot except by defeating the American-Zionist project against the Arab region, and to cling to the ties of Pan-Arabism alone and nothing else." Sheikh al-Qaradawi Doubts Muslim Involvement in Alexandria Church Bombing; Points to Unnamed "Foreign Hand"

Yusuf al-Qardawi, President of World Union of Muslim Scholars, joined other Islamic leaders yesterday in condemning the attacks, and also in pointing the finger of blame at an unknown foreign hand. He didn't go so far as to say that the Zionists were behind it, but he did say that it didn't make sense for a Muslim to be behind it. It's also interesting to note that the Muslim Brotherhood's official English-language website has a story on al-Qaradawi's comments, but in their translation they leave out al-Qaradawi's statement about how he doesn't think a Muslim was behind it. (See the original Arabic here.)

Al-Qaradawi: Those Behind the Alexandria Bombing Are Criminals and Blood-Shedders; Islam Is Innocent of Them

...He pointed to the possibility of a foreign hand being behind the attack, with the purpose of igniting sectarian strife in Egypt, stating: "I fear that there may be a foreign hand behind this action, for it does not make sense for an Egyptian or a Muslim to be behind it. Perhaps a foreign hand is attempting to ignite sectarian strife...

Saudi Sheikh: Terrorists Use Zionist and Western Weapons; Give Rise to "Right-Wing Extremists" Who Attack Mosques and Veiled Women

More from our favorite Sheikh, Salman al-'Awda. In what is ostensibly a condemnation of Islamic terrorist groups, al-'Awda nevertheless manages to blame Zionists and Westerners for supplying these groups with weapons, and then further manages to levy the absurb allegation that "right-wing extremists" are attacking mosques and defenseless Muslim women in the streets. And of course, through all this, there's no acknowledgement of any possible blame within Islam for the actions of terrorists. No mention of commands from the Qur'an to "kill the unbelievers wherever ye find them" (9:5), or "fight them until there is no more fitna" (8:39) or "smite them at their necks and chop all their finger-tips off them" (47:4), or any other such verses from the holy book. (See the original Arabic here.)
Salman: Weapons Used by Terrorist Groups to Kill and Bomb Are "Israeli" and "Zionist"
Lutfi 'Abd-al-Latif, Riyadh,
Sheikh Salman bin Fahd al-'Awda, who runs the website "Islam al-Youm," said that the arms used by violent terrorist groups to kill, commit bloodshed, and carry out terrorist operations, are produced in Israeli factories, and are acquired from Zionist and Western circles. He asked--where did they come by these weapons with which to kill and carry out bombings in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Algeria, and some Western countries? He stated that they did not make them, nor did they acquire them from the black market, but they were given to them from Zionist and Western circles. He added that these groups endeavor to doctrinally justify their criminal operations, while acquiring these weapons from those who are hostile to everything which is Islamic. ... Sheikh al-'Awda said: "Jihad is innocent of these criminal acts, and this absurdity and chaos in the name of religion. These groups who raise the name and banners of Islam to justify killings and bombings provide a precious gift to the enemies of Islam, and to the Zionists." Al-'Awda described these acts as "despicable," and those who carry them out are worthless. They fan the flames of people's emotions, and cause the state of hostility which is carried by right-wing extremists, leading to attacks on mosques, Muslim groups, and veiled women in the streets. Former Lebanese Minister: "The Alexandria Church Bombing Was a Zionist-Western Attempt to Target the National Fabric of Egypt"

Another attempt to blame the horrific Alexandria Church bombing on the Jews.  As if Israel doesn't have enough problems with the hundreds of millions of Muslims surrounding them who want to push them into the sea, now they're going to attack the other major oppressed religious minority in the region?  These comments come from former Lebanese defense minister 'Abd-al-Rahim Murad, and appear to be following a pattern for him, as he also previously blamed the Jews for the 9/11 bombings.  (See original Arabic here.)
Murad: The Alexandria Church Bombing Was a Zionist-Western Attempt to Target the National Fabric of Egypt, 2 Jan 2010
The president of the Unity Party, former minister 'Abd-al-Rahim Murad, condemned the attack on the Coptic Church in Alexandria, stressing that it is "clear evidence of Zionist-Western attempts to target the national fabric of Egypt, and the unity of the sons of this ancient Arab country, which has long enriched us with its national solidarity, and its ability to overcome foreign attempts to sow sedition and division."

Murad further stated that, "Whatever labels those criminal hands place on their work, it will not deceive Egyptian and Arab public opinion, for they are working to further the plans of Zionists and Westerners who want to strike at the unity of our national and Arab societies in order to justify the legitimacy of their own religious nation, which was established on extortion and abhorrent racism."

Lebanese Sheikh on Alexandria Bombing: "This Terrorist Act Bears the Mark of Zionism"

This statement was printed in Shorouk news and several other Arab online newspapers today (see original Arabic here):

The Vice President of the Supreme Islamic Shi'ite Council in Lebanon, Sheikh 'Abd-al-Amir Qablan, denounced the bombing which occurred in front of Saints' Church in Alexandria, in northern Egypt, and which led to the death of 21 people.
Qablan said in a statement: "This terrorist act bears the mark of Zionism, which is accustomed to destroying religious holy places, and is in the interest of Zionism, which seeks to sow fitna, and foment sectarian and ideological differences."
The Myth of Islamic Tolerance: How Islamic Law Treats Non-Muslims
Of course, it was those evil Zionists again!  I know it seems implausible at first, but it really makes sense if you just remember to follow this simple formula:  successful terrorist attack against infidels = work of brave Muslim mujahideen; terrorist attack which creates popular backlash against Muslims = work of evil Zionists and/or evangelical Christians.
